Alison Krauss (born on July 23, 1971 in Decatur, Illinois), is a bluegrass singer and virtuoso fiddle player who grew up in Champaign, Illinois. Krauss initially studied classical violin, starting at five, but she quickly switched to bluegrass. By age eight she started entering local talent contests and at ten she had her own band. At twelve she won the Illinois State Fiddle Championship and the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass in America named her the Most Promising Fiddler in the Midwest. Her debut album came out when she was 16.

Alison Krauss (born July 23, 1971)[1] is an American bluegrass-country singer and fiddle player. She entered the music industry at a young age, winning local contests by the age of ten and recording for the first time on her brother's album at fourteen. She signed with Rounder Records in 1985 and released her first solo album at sixteen in 1987. She was invited to join the band with which she still performs, Alison Krauss & Union Station (AKUS), and later released her first album with them as a group in 1989.

Alison Krauss, at the age of 35, has achieved more career milestones than most people do in their lifetime. Her first album was released when she was 16. She has released a total of eleven albums, all on Rounder Records, with her long time band of highly acclaimed musicians, Union Station. Their most recent release is Lonely Runs Both Ways, which has already been certified Gold by the RIAA, with their two-disc recording Live and their two-disc Live DVD being certified Platinum. To date, she has earned 20 Grammy Awards and multiple Country Music Association Awards, International Bluegrass Music Awards and countless others. Her album releases have been critical and commercial successes, with multiple RIAA platinum and gold certified records and more than a combined 7 million albums sold.

Alison Krauss started playing the violin when she was five. She quickly grew tired of the rigors of classical music and started playing bluegrass. By the age of eight, she was playing in talent contests, and by 12 had won Illinois State Fiddle Championship. She was signed to Rounder Records by 14. Her debut album Too Late To Cry, was recorded in 1987, two years later, with her band Union Station (Jeff White, Alison Brown, and Viktor Krauss), and released to critical acclaim. In '88, the band won Society's National Band Championship, and in '89, they won a Grammy.
