Linda as Alice In the beginning, producers of Alice were not out to make waves with her trademark phrase. They were simply trying to invent a phrase that would best suit this bold, man-hungry waitress, without going too far for a television audience. As Polly relates in an interview, "If you remember the movie Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Flo was pretty blue in that. But she couldn't use the same kind of language on TV and they were looking for something that would sound naughty but not be naughty." When presented with the "grits" phrase, Polly was initially skeptical and complained that it sounded odd. But, she goes on, "I did it and it turned out to be very funny.

In later seasons Vera got married to the lovable Elliot, and in the very last episode Mel sold the diner to a contractor, Vera was pregnant, Jolene opened a beauty salon and Alice finally got her dream of being a singer. The show was around for 9 seasons and was a TV version of the Oscar winning movie Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore with Ellen Burstyn. Vic Tayback played Mel in both the movie and series. Mel's Diner was sold in the final episode and so was its set. One of the buyers was Columbia Pictures, who planned to use some of the furnishings in a future production.
The series is loosely based on the popular movie "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore". Alice's original run was aired on CBS from August 31, 1976 to July 2, 1985. Alice won many Golden Gloves and Emmy Awards during its 9 season run (202 episodes). In 1980 the character Flo which was played by Polly Holliday was given her own spin off TV Series entitled Flo.
