Alice Faye: Rudy Vallee
built 215 days ago
Alice Faye made her film debut in this scandalous pre code musical. Producer White has to deal with crooner Rudy Vallee, Faye, a goofy Jimmy Durante, and Cliff Edwards in between the wild music numbers. Some of the numbers like Durante's blackface bit are shocking today. Quality is a bit lesser on this one, note there are blips in the sound midway through the film.

Faye's film break occurred in 1933 when Lillian Harvey walked out on the lead role in the movie George White's Scandals. Faye was originally engaged to perform a musical number with Vallee but was elevated to the starring role. She became a popular favourite with cinema audiences of the 1930s, especially from 1936 when producer Darryl F. Zanuck made a deliberate effort to soften her image from that of a wise cracking showgirl. Most often cast in musicals, she was responsible for introducing many popular songs to the hit parade, and although not regarded a serious dramatic actress, she gave what many critics described as her best dramatic performance in In Old Chicago ( 1938 ).

Cast in musicals most of all, Faye introduced many popular songs to the hit parade. Considered less than serious as an actress and more than serious as a singer, Faye nailed what many critics consider her best acting performance in 1937's In Old Chicago. She more than held her own - in spite of a mild speech impediment - with co-stars such as Vallee, Al Jolson, Charlotte Greenwood, and Edward Everett Horton, as well as leading men such as Don Ameche, Tyrone Power, and John Payne.
