Alice Cooper: Rock
built 635 days ago
In 1991, amidst the grunge rock explosion, Cooper's album Hey Stoopid was released to a mediocre response, as well as the home video documentary "Alice Cooper: Prime Cuts" which chronicled his career story up to that point. He ... appeared on the Guns N' Roses album Use Your Illusion I, singing backup on the track "The Garden". He also made a brief appearance as the abusive stepfather of Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare On Elm Street film Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991). Cooper toured USA, headlining the pre-OzzFest concept "Operation: Rock n' Roll" festival tour.

Rock star Alice Cooper shocked the world in the 1970s with an alcohol-fueled stage show that explored taboos ranging from murder to necrophilia. Years later he shocked the rock world by quietly embracing Christianity.

By 1987, Cooper finally won his battle with the bottle, and reverted back to his '70's look and attitude. Although he still hadn't returned from obscurity, his 1989 comeback was just around the corner when he released 1987's Raise Your Fist And Yell. The album was a somewhat typical headbangin' heavy metal offering, though its sound was more raw than much of the Bon Jovi-esque pop metal that was popular at the time. On Side One, Cooper shakes his fist at anyone who would stand in the way of his rock and roll party. The songs on Side Two possess a more gruesome horror movie mentality; in fact, "Prince Of Darkness" was the title song for an awful John Carpenter flick that Cooper had a cameo in. Raise Your Fist And Yell isn't one of Alice's best, but it's never boring, and has plenty of wild guitar playing to hold your attention.

Although it has been many years since he changed his name to Alice Cooper, he is not solely defined by his trend-setting brand of rock 'n' roll. He has been married to the same woman, Sheryl, for more than 20 years. He has three children: Calico, Dashiell, and Sonora Rose. He is serious about his onstage career, but even more serious about his role as a husband and father. When his kids were younger, he was an active Little League and soccer coach.

While hard rock is relatively rare for the Saenger, Cooper follows well-received performances by Queensryche in August 2006 and Godsmack in May 2007. Interim Saenger manager Randy Schwoerer said he jumped at the chance to add Cooper to the list.

If you think about it, Cooper pretty much anticipated all of the trends that go on in rock music today. He helped invent the rock as theater, created new fashion trends, and even ran for president against Nixon. His style and actions set precedents for shock-rock and numetal, like Marilyn Manson (note the female name change too) and Rob Zombie, Glam Rock like T. Rex and David Bowie, industrial like Nine Inch Nails, and most notably 80's metal like Twisted Sister and Poison.
