Former Wimbledon semifinalist Alexandra Stevenson had surgery Tuesday in Birmingham for a right shoulder injury that has bothered her since January 2003. Stevenson played in the main draw at just seven WTA Tour events this season. An MRI after the U.S. Open showed she had three labral tears in her shoulder and needed surgery.
Alexandra Stevenson had her 15 minutes in 1999. She was 18 and hit a ball like Floyd Mayweather Jr. does a punching bag. She was all power on the court and charming as can be off it. She showed up at Wimbledon as just another qualifier and departed a semifinalist, capturing the fascination of tennis fans around the world while subsequently watching her personal life conveyed to millions who learned she was fathered by basketball great Julius Erving.
By the time Alexandra Stevenson ended her amazing run at Wimbledon, the tennis world was still almost as shocked by her life off the court. First her mother, Samantha, twisted Wimbledon's knickers by alleging that she's had to protect her African-American daughter from racism and lesbianism on tour. "Alexandra was called a n----- by a player on court in a match," says Samantha, who is white. Then the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reprinted Alexandra's birth certificate. Her father is listed as Julius Winfield Erving II--basketball legend Dr. J. After initially denying that he fathered Alexandra, Erving fessed up. "I haven't talked to her.

Alexandra Stevenson broke onto the world tennis stage in 1999 when she became the first player to come out of the qualifying rounds to reach the Wimbledon women's semifinals. She has made a steady rise up in the world rankings ever since, reaching as high as No. 18. In 2003, she was selected by team captain Billie Jean King as a representative of the U.S. Fed Cup team, which has defeated the Czech Republic and Italy en route to its upcoming trip to Moscow for the November semifinals.
After rolling to the round of 16 last week in Carlsbad, Stevenson was feeling good about her game, her problematic back and her decision to add yoga to her workout schedule. But those good vibes began to disappear in the third game of the first set Monday.
In 2003, Stevenson represented the United States as part of the Fed Cup team that defeated the Czech Republic and Italy, before losing to France in the finals. It was soon after the Fed Cup finals when Stevenson suffered her shoulder and a foot injury. She had surgery to repair a labral tear on September 21, 2004, and has seen limited action since then.
