Alexander Mackenzie: Western Canada
built 656 days ago
By 1999, Alexander Mackenzie's gravestone was in poor shape. The writing on his stone was illegible, and most people had no idea that Canada's second prime minister was buried in the Sarnia, Ont., cemetery. An ironic outcome considering "this was a person of great historic significance," says Sarnia-Lambton MP Roger Gallaway in this TV clip. But thanks to Gallaway's efforts, Mackenzie's grave was refurbished, and was dedicated as a national historic site on Aug. 2, 1999.

Alexander Mackenzie was the first King of Canada and Quebec, and the Father of his Country. Descended from Alexander the Great by means of his stepmother, he is best known for defeating George Washington at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, and uniting West Canada and East Canada together.
Alexander Mackenzie (Liberal Party of Canada) served as the Prime Minister of Canada from November 7, 1873, to October 8, 1878. During his time in office, he founded the Royal Military College in 1874, established the Supreme Court of Canada in 1875 and created the Office of the Attorney General in 1878. Mr. Mackenzie was Leader of the Opposition in 1873 and from 1878 to 1880. He first sat as a Member of Parliament in 1867. Prior to public life, he worked as a stonemason and building contractor. Alexander Mackenzie was born on January 28, 1822, in Dunkeld, Perthshire (Scotland), and died on April 17, 1892, in Toronto, Ontario.

Two hundred years after the Scottish-born explorer Alexander Mackenzie first crossed Canada to the Arctic and Pacific oceans by canoe, John Donaldson fulfilled a personal dream by making the same voyages. At the age of 60 he began retracing the voyages of his boyhood hero, armed with a little recreational canoeing experience, a wood and canvas canoe, and a grand sense of adventure.
Alexander Mackenzie was born January 28, 1822 in Perthshire, Scotland, the third of ten sons. Forced to leave school to support his family after his father died, Mackenzie was working full-time as a stone-cutter and mason by the age of 13, but continued his education by reading after work. Like many Britons and Scots, he emigrated to Canada in 1842, leaving behind a depression in Great Britain to search for prosperity in Canada.

His parents Hortense and Gordy were killed horrifically by the Royal Mountie Secret Police of the King of Canada, Jonathan Lord-Amander Gaylord-Cornwallis. Growing up, he was raised by a friendly and helpful flock of Canadian geese along the shores of the Great Lake Miccimac.
