Alex Rodriguez was born in the Washington Heights section of New York City. When he was four, Rodriguez moved with his parents to their native Dominican Republic. After the family moved to Miami, Florida three years later, Rodriguez's father announced his intention to move back north to New Jersey for a short time. He never returned, leaving his wife and young Alex to struggle in their new environment.

Alex Emanuel Rodriguez was born in New York City on July 27, 1975. He stayed in NYC until he was four, when his family moved back to his parents' native land - the Dominican Republic. It was there that Alex Rodriguez first learned to play [B]aseball. Four years later, his family moved back to the United States and settled in Miami, Florida. Not long after that, Alex's parents got divorced and his father left town. His mother took two jobs to support Alex, his brother Joe and his sister, Suzy.

In addition to the learning center in Miami, Rodriguez is reaching out to the Children's Aid Society Boys & Girls Club in Washington Heights, the neighborhood in New York City, where he was born. Youngsters in this needy community will benefit from his generosity with a program developed to enhance their mental health. These programs will be offered through five Boys & Girls Club public schools. Rodriguez and his wife Cynthia, who holds a master's degree in psychology, plan to make mental health wellness a lifelong philanthropic endeavor.
