Alex Barron was born on the 11th of June, 1970 in San Diego, California, and like many of his contemporaries was racing go-karts at the tender age of nine on local tracks in the surrounding countryside. At that time, Alex raced for fun and recreation and becoming a professional in this sport was not yet in his mind. However, even back then he showed a talent for going fast and displayed a distinct competitive urge combined with a rather strong will to win. All of these attributes were ... apparent during his early baseball career. He played short stop at El Camino High in San Diego. A bigger career in that sport was cut short, when he suffered an injury to his leg from a circular saw.

On lap 164 Alex Barron made slight contact with Tomas Scheckter, sending him into a half-spin into turn 4. Fortunately, he kept it off of the wall, away from traffic, and with the engine still running he calmly went to the pits for new tires and a splash of fuel.

[U]nless Nunn can find some extra sponsorship and Toyota steps up financially, there's a good chance Barron will be a spectator or spotter again for the final three races of 2003. Somebody asked him after Michigan if it was his biggest win?

Barron, who often dabbles in remote control car racing, started off slowly, losing the first three-lap race on a makeshift road course designed by Tom Dyer, an instructor at the Jim Russell Racing School. Barron roared back, though, taking the final two races, and bragging rights.

Barron bested a tough 125cc Moto grid, edging Bobby Oergel, Curtis Cooksey, Bonnier Moulton and Joe Janowski for the win. Michael Valiante won the 125cc Open class over Jesse Rooke and Philip Giebler while future 125cc frontrunner Steven Robertson bagged the 80cc Junior win over some kid named Jonathan Bomarito (current Atlantic hotshoe) and ColoradoĆ¢€™s Ryan Bailey.
