Alcoa (NYSE: AA) is the world’s third largest producer of aluminum, behind Rio Tinto and Rusal. [1] Alcoa leads the world in alumina production and capacity. From its operational headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Alcoa oversees operations in 44 countries. It is followed closely by a former subsidiary, Alcan, a Canadian-based company in Montreal, which was the third-leading producer behind Alcoa, but in terms of sales Alcan is ahead of Alcoa. Alcoa made a hostile $27 billion bid for Alcan on May 7th, 2007, aiming to reunite the two companies and form the largest aluminum producer in the world. The takeover bid was withdrawn after Alcan announced a friendly takeover by Rio Tinto on July 12, 2007.
For Alcoa, managing a system the complexity and size of its GDW is considerable undertaking. The company adopted Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g to administer and monitor its clustered database and applications. As a result, Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g has improved the administration of the GDW, replaced a third-party database management tool, and feeds alerts to a third-party enterprise monitoring solution. Labor and time-savings ... extend to the GDW's database storage management and provisioning. In conjunction with Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g, Alcoa uses Oracle Database 10g's Automatic Storage Management feature, a database volume manager and file system optimized for database access, to automate and streamline performance and storage management for its GDW.

-- The base wage of 74 cents an hour at Alcoa's plants meets just 37 percent of a small family's most basic survival needs. In the last three years, real wages have actually fallen by 13 percent at Alcoa. Like Wal-Mart employees, Alcoa associates in Honduras have to rely upon charity to survive. -- Often workers have to urinate, or even defecate, in their clothing after repeatedly being denied permission to use the bathroom. The bathrooms are ... dirty, lacking lights and toilet paper. Workers who take "too long" may be pulled from the toilet by guards.
Hand wrote that he could consider only the percentage of the market in “virgin aluminum” for which Alcoa accounted. Alcoa had argued that it was in the position of having to compete with scrap. Even if the scrap was aluminum that Alcoa had manufactured in the first instance, it no longer controlled its marketing. But no, Hand defined the relevant market narrowly in accord with the prosecution’s theory.
