The goal of Alcatraz is to enable safe execution of untrusted code. Unlike sandboxing approches that restrict file access, Alcatraz allows untrusted code to access the entire file system. This factor enables most programs to run successfully under Alcatraz, as opposed to experiencing runtime aborts/exceptions due to security violations.
In 1979, along came Joe Oakes, back from the Ironman in Hawaii, with the notion of hooking an Alcatraz swim to the legendary 7-mile Dipsea Run in Marin County via a 15 mile bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge. (By way of historical footnote, the Dipsea Run is the second oldest sanctioned foot race in the country – only the Boston Marathon is older).
At Alcatraz, Johnston was allowed to hand pick his correctional officers from the federal prison system. Johnson and Sanford Bates created a vision of guiding principles that the prison would operate under: No prisoner would be directly sentenced to Alcatraz from the courts. Wardens from the various penitentiaries were polled and permitted to send their most incorrigible inmates to the "Rock." cellblock Alcatraz being one of the top-notch prisons in the world, some men dared to escape, but most of the time it failed. The best known escape took place in June 1962 when Frank Morris along with brothers John and Clarence Anglin slipped out of prison using raincoat as a floatation to get across the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco Bay. Their bodies were never found so they assumed that they drowned.
The Alcatraz 100 Club was inspired by a group of San Francisco Bay Swimmers that accomplished the task of 100 swims from the Alcatraz to the San Francisco shores. Inspired by the beauty of the Bay year round they decided to share this goal with all the swimming community around the world. If you dream to reach the same goal or just share your Alcatraz crossings with others you are invited to join the Alcatraz 100 Club. The Centurions are committed to help you to reach your goals of one crossing to 100.
