Transportation to Alcatraz is via ferryboats departing from Pier 33. The ferry trip lasts approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Once on the island, you may take any available ferry back to San Francisco; ferries depart the island every 45 minutes.

Long before Alcatraz became home to some of the most notorious outlaws in the country, it was known as a place to be avoided by Native Americans who believed it to contain evil spirits. These Native Americans, called the Ohlone (a Miwok Indian word meaning "western people"), often utilized the island as a place of isolation or banishment for members violating tribal laws. Despite the legends of evil spirits, Alcatraz was ... used by the Indians as an area for food gathering, especially bird eggs and sea-life.

The occupation of Alcatraz Island represents the longest continuous occupation of a federal facility by any minority group in US history. Alcatraz set in motion a wave of overtly nationalist Indian militancy that ultimately resulted in abandonment of the US government’s policy of termination and the adoption of a policy of Indian self-determination. This publication commemorates the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Alcatraz occupation and presents poetry and political statements written by Indian people during the occupation or in commemoration of the event.

Today Alcatraz is considered an ecological preserve, home to one of the largest western gull colonies on the Northern California Coast. The thrill of being on Alcatraz comes both from an awareness of its historical significance as well as the prison's portrayal through Hollywood and motion pictures. Over the years, many of the former inmates returned to the island amidst the tourists, still trying to come to terms with their imprisonment on Alcatraz, trying to understand why people choose to visit a place that for them is such a monument of anguish.
