Lessing, who won the Escape From Alcatraz race earlier this year and is among the pre-race favorites for the inaugural Ironman 70.3 World Championship in November, will return for the third Podcast, which deals with race day. The guest for the fourth Podcast will be Dr. Robert Portman, co-author of two books on sports nutrition and hydration, The Performance Zone and Nutrient Timing. These books have reshaped conventional thinking on the most effective ways that athletes can refuel and rehydrate during exercise.

According to Indian oral history, Alcatraz was first used as a place of isolation or ostracism for tribal members. It was ... used for camping and gathering foods such as bird eggs and sea life. Indian people later used the island to escape from the California Mission system.

While this may be the most violent escape from Alcatraz, it is by all means not the most famous. This attempt was that of Frank Morris and brothers Clarence and John Anglin. In 1962, a fellow prisoner named Allen West helped the trio to devise a clever plan to construct a raft, inflatable life vests and human-like dummies that could be used to fool the guards during head counts. Over a several month period, the men used tools stolen from work sites to chip away at the vent shafts in their cells. They fabricated the life vests, the rafts and the dummies. They ... ingeniously created replicated grills that hid the chipped away cement around the small vents.

Players try to escape from the prison island Alcatraz in this quite abstract game. Board resembles a chess board, it's a 9x9 grid where players must move their pieces from one end to the other. Each piece can move horizontally or vertically as many spaces as the player wishes, but there are few complications: the guards. Each row has a guard. Whenever a piece moves to a row, the guard on that row moves as many spaces towards the piece as the piece moved (if you move three rows up, the guard on that row moves three spaces towards you). If the guard catches you, the move is illegal.

Over the 29 years of operation, there were 14 separate escape attempts from Alcatraz. Twenty-three convicts were caught and six were shot and killed. The cold waters of San Francisco Bay and the powerful currents made escaping very difficult. In the escape attempt of June 11, 1962, made famous by the Clint Eastwood movie “Escape from Alcatraz ,” Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin vanished from their cells and were never seen again. They were presumed drowned.

This movie is the dramatization of what probably the only successful attempt was to escape from the prison island called Alcatraz. This prison was thought to be the safest ever, but as some inmates proved: there is absolutely no prison in the world you can't escape from! You know these people are criminals, but you can't help it to support them, hoping that they will make it on their way out of there, outsmarting all the guards and the prison warden.
