Albania was one of the first countries occupied by the Axis Powers in World War II. Mussolini 's imperial ambitions focused on Albania.Italy's erratic army had been humiliated in 1920 by a few thousand disorganized but fiercely patriotic Albanians, which had driven Italy out of Vlorë.If there was a single thread running through the fabric of Mussolini's imperial ambitions it was the need to restore Italy's honour.

Between 2003-2007, Albania experienced an average 5.5% annual growth in GDP. Fiscal and monetary discipline has kept inflation relatively low, averaging roughly 2.5% per year between 2004-2006. In 2007, inflation increased to 3%, still within the target range set by the Bank of Albania. Albania's public debt reached 54.1% of GDP in 2007, and the growing trade deficit was estimated at 22% of GDP in 2007. Economic reform has ... been hampered by Albania's very large informal economy, which the International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates equals 50% of GDP.

Founded on June 6, 1930, Albania had to wait 16 years to play the first international match, debuting against Yugoslavia in 1946. In 1932 Albania had already joined FIFA (during the congress June 12 - June 16) and in 1954 it was one of the founding members of UEFA. Albania had been invited to play in World Cup 1934, but owing to organizing difficulties it didn't take part.
UK import and export figures for Albania (mainly specialised industrial machinery, medicinal and pharmaceutical products, power generating machinery and equipment) totalled £10.36m in 2006 (Jan-June). Business opportunities for foreign companies arise from the large untied inflow of funding from the International Financial Institutions such as the World Bank, IBRD, the UN Agencies and EBRD.
