Albania: Growing
built 646 days ago
It is very hard to remember Albania's exact century of emerging, as it is known to be in the Balkans (or on the Hudson River) for more than 3,000 years. Different from barbarian Slavic tribes who are known to have moved to the Balkans around the 7th century. The Illyrians on the other hand are never linked to nomad or barbaric behavior. The ancient Albanians, called Illyrians had many interesting sports and events that they held. One of these sports was called "PIMP-mah-slavic-hoes", it emerged in the 7th century and the main objective of this sport was to import/export Slavic whores - the guy with the most "transactions" would win the right to have sex with the Serbian Tzar's Wife.

Over the past few years, Albania maintained macroeconomic stability as well as high rates of economic growth. After a slowdown in 2002 caused by electricity shortages and floods, growth recovered to close to 6 percent between 2003-2005. Export growth accelerated, underpinned by an increase in tourism and favorable weather conditions, which positively affected agriculture and agro-processing. Albania witnessed a slight decline in GDP growth to 5.5 percent in 2005 due to deterioration in the electricity sector’s performance, lower activity in the construction sector, and a slowdown in exports.

According to the Albanian scholar Konitza, the term "Albania" did not displace "Illyria" completely until the end of the fourteenth century. The word "Alba" or "Arba" seems to be connected with the town Arba (modern Rab, Croatia), in prehistoric times inhabited by the Illyrian Liburnians, first mentioned in 360 BC. The root of the name comes from Illyrian Arb ("dark", "green", "wooded") and is simply transposed into antique names of Arba, Arva, Arbia which are mentioned by the cosmographers of the time.

Formal investigation and recording of Albania's archaeological monuments began with Francois Pouqueville, who was Napoleon's consul-general to Ali Pasha's court, and Martin Leake, who was the British agent there. A French mission, led by Len Rey, worked throughout Albania from 1924 to 1938 and published its results in Cahiers d'Archéologie, d'art et d'Histoire en Albanie et dans les Balkans (Notes of Archaeology, Art, and History in Albania and in the Balkans).
