Albania is a member of NATO's Partnership for Peace and has formally applied to join NATO. In June 1998, a NATO cell was set up in Tirana to co-ordinate Partnership for Peace assistance. Albania continues to contribute to international military operations and, in recent times, has contributed troops to operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Initiating enhanced oil recovery techniques in Albania is an important first step beyond primary recovery techniques towards capturing additional reserves and production. Every one percent additional recovery on this 2.0 billion barrel original-oil-in-place resource will be important in terms of volumes and value.

Although recent steps have been taken to improve the transportation infrastructure, Albania has a limited railway system and just one domestic international airport, which has achieved very high standards after receiving substantial international investment. Because of the mountainous terrain, goods traveling overland must spend hours traversing the relatively sparse network of switchback roads, many of them of poor quality, to reach destinations that are relatively close.

The first time that Albania competed for a place in the world's elite for the World Cup 1966 in England was a match against Netherlands in mid-1964. Drawn in Group 5 with the Dutch were ... Northern Ireland and Switzerland. Albania only got a point from this qualification round in a game against Northern Ireland in Tirana, which actually prevented Northern Ireland from qualfiying.
One of the first written evidences of the use of the word " Albanoi " as the name of an Illyrian tribe in what is now north-central Albania goes back to the 130 A.D., in a work of Tolomeo. Albanopolis of the Albani, a place located on the map of Ptolemy (3.12.20) and ... named on an ancient family epitaph at Scupi, which has been identified with the Zgrdhesh hill-fort near Kruja in northern Albania. Moreover, Arbanon is just likely to be the name of a district - the plain of the Mat has been suggested - rather than particular place. An indication of movement from higher altitudes in a much earlier period has been detected in the distribution of place-names ending in -esh that appears to derive from the latin -enisis or -esis, between the Shkumbin and the Mat, with a concentration between Elbasan and Kruja.

In Albania, the earliest settlements have been discovered in the Gajtan cavern (Shkodra), in Konispol, at Mount Dajti, and at Saranda. Fragments of Cyclopean structures, were discovered at Kretsunitsa, Arinishta, and other sites in the district of Gjirokastra. The walls, partly Cyclopean, of an ancient city (perhaps Byllis) are visible at Gradishti on the picturesque Viosa River. Few traces remain of the once celebrated Dyrrhachium (today Durrës).
