Alastor is a sentient sword and a winged devil in the first Devil May Cry game by Capcom. His first appearance is a scene where the sword moves on its own, stabbing the protagonist Dante through the chest. In the game, Alastor has his own will, but is overpowered by Dante, and becomes his primary weapon for most of the game; the spirit of Alastor warns Dante of impending danger via an electric surge through the blade.

The Alastor is a wreck lying at the bottom of Ringhaddy Sound in Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland. Built for Sir Thomas Octave Murdoch Sopwith by Camper & Nicholsons in 1926, she was a luxury diesel yachts 43 m long and displacing 340 t. After changing owner in 1929, she was eventually acquired by the Ministry of War Transport at the outbreak of WWII, and served as an armed transport and anti-submarine vessel throughout the war. She finally sank after a fire broke out on board in 1946 while being moored in Ringhaddy Sound for repainting. The photograph shows a sidescan sonar image of the wreck.

Alastor had fallen silent and was staring sullenly at Jacob as he spoke. Jacob noticed this and shrugged. “At least you’ve stopped that infernal racket.” A beat later he laughed at his unintentional joke. “Get it, infernal? Come on, Alastor, it’s funny.”

Alastor had the lead at the 200m pole but was now under pressure from a determined Icy Air. The Al Mufti gelding, under a stinging ride from Puller, kept finding more ... and though able to get alongside, the mare could get no further, going down by a half-length.

In Alastor the speaker ostensibly recounts the life of a Poet who zealously pursues the most obscure part of nature in search of "strange truths in undiscovered lands." As the Poet wanders one night, he dreams of a veiled maid. This veiled vision brings with her an intimation of the supernatural world that lies beyond nature. This dream vision serves as a mediator between the natural and supernatural domains by being both spirit and an element of human love. As the Poet attempts to unite with the spirit, night's blackness swallows the vision and severs his dreamy link to the supernatural.

Alastor's sound revolves around thick electric guitar and the no nonsense singing style of Elizabeth Elkins. While she certainly can sing, she has a distinctively hard edge, certainly contrasting her physical appearance (see the band's website for photos). They must be a wonderful live act. Those interested in a sharp contrast to much of the music typically reviewed here should pay the band a visit and check out one of the band's websites for audio samples. Talented musicians, their two self-produced recordings are worth exploring and a nice listen!
