Alan Tudyk: Joss Whedon

Alan Tudyk, who reprises the role of space pilot Wash in the upcoming SF movie Serenity, told SCI FI Wire that it was creator Joss Whedon's perseverance that got the movie off the ground. Serenity is based on Whedon's canceled Fox SF television series Firefly. "I think it's a testament to his tenacity that he got Fox to sell the rights and that he got another studio—and no little studio, but Universal—to buy the rights and then to make this multi-million dollar movie based on a show that was canceled," Tudyk said in an interview. "Today is my day off, but yesterday I was shooting with everybody. And there's a very big déjà vu going on right now."

Alan Tudyk auditioned through a casting office and several months later was called in for a test audition, where he met with Whedon. He was then told to come back in to test with the possible Zoes (his character's wife) and that it was down to him and one other candidate. The Zoes did not work out and Tudyk was sent home, but received a call informing him he had the part anyway.[28] His audition tape is included in the special features of the series' DVD release.
After filming "Death at a Funeral," Alan landed a role in James Mangold's western, "3:10 to Yuma," opposite Russell Crowe and Christian Bale due to be released this fall. Other movie credits include Judd Apatow's "Knocked Up," "Serenity," the cult hit by Joss Whedon, "I, Robot," where he played the robot, Sonny, opposite Will Smith, "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" as Pirate Steve, "Hearts in Atlantis" with Sir Anthony Hopkins, "A Knight's Tale," "28 Days" with Sandra Bullock, "Wonder Boys," and "Patch Adams."

Tudyk then went on to gain roles in Hearts in Atlantis and Ice Age. However, Tudyk then went on to get the role of the pilot Hoban Washburne in Joss Whedon's post-Buffy show, Firefly, a role he will reprise in the upcoming movie Serenity, slated for an April 2005 release.
