Alan Mackin is finally enjoying life on the baseline after years on the breadline. The 25-year-old Scot struggled for years to make ends meet in his bid to make the grade in world tennis. Just a few months ago, Paisley's Mackin was on the brink of chucking his racket in the bin. But he has been rescued from despair with funding instigated by the Lawn Tennis Association's new chief executive Roger Draper. In the first six months of last year, he won only a handful of matches and by August had slumped to 385 in the world.
The current chairman and major shareholder Alan Mackin has stated his intention to sell their Firs Park home and move the club, possibly to the nearby town of Grangemouth, with the club potentially playing at Grangemouth Stadium. Other possibilities include sharing with Falkirk F.C. at the Falkirk Stadium.
In the main draw, Alan Mackin faces Rajeev Ram and Josh Goodall plays 8th seed Zach Fleishman. Ram is ranked 201 and made the Waikoloa challenger quarters last week. His game is very well-suited to the indoor plexipave courts in Dallas, he's got a big serve and is a serve-volleyer and he'll look to rush the net as much as possible. Given Mackin's recent form, he should have a good chance of getting through but he'll need to serve well and find a way to get past Ram's 6ft 4 frame at the net.
Andy Murray, Greg Rusedski, Jamie Baker and Alan Mackin make up the four-man team for the clash in Odessa between September 22nd and 24th. Jamie Delgado will ... train with the team during the run-up to the tie.

It is ironic that when he was chosen by Roger Taylor for his debut against Australia in Sydney in February 2003, there were those in the hierarchy who believed that Mackin should have been nowhere near the team. Now they are delighted to see him thrown to Federer in what might be a second and final sacrifice for the cause. Such are the fluctuating fortunes of the sport.
Mackin, making his first grand slam appearance away from Wimbledon, is not exactly used to such an unrelenting sun. Just to underline the point, a glance at the forecast for his home town of Paisley showed that a high of around five degrees was predicted for yesterday with perhaps some evening snowfall.
