Federer's 6-0, 6-0, 6-2 victory over the unfortunate Alan Mackin required just 75 minutes of his time and gave Switzerland a very quick lead over Britain in their World Group qualifying match in Geneva. Federer's teammate Stanislas Wawrinka then made it 2-0 with a more suspenseful 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory over 18-year-old Andy Murray.

Mackin is ranked No.265 in the world and reached his career best of 214 at the end of 2004. He made his Davis Cup debut against Australia in 2003 and won his first rubber against Israel last July.
