Prolific British playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn is recovering in a hospital in his hometown of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, after suffering a stroke. In a statement released to the press, the author said, "I hope to be back on my feet, or at least my left leg, as soon as possible."
Sir Alan Ayckbourn has receivedmany honorary degrees, is Freeman of the Borough of Scarborough, was appointed CBE in 1987 and knighted for his services to theatrein 1997. His most recent play is Improbable Fiction (2007).
A Chorus of Disapproval, Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s twentieth play—and one of his most successful— premiered at the Stephen Joseph Theater in the Round in Scarborough, England, in May, 1984. Following the sell-out season in Scarborough, the play opened in a large-scale production at the National Theater in London in August, 1985. The success of the play earned Ayckbourn three major British theater awards including the London Evening Standard Award, the Olivier Award, and the Drama Award.

Plays include Absurd Person Singular, Comic Potential, Communicating Doors, Relatively Speaking, How the Other Half Loves, House and Garden, The Norman Conquests, Bedroom Farce, Woman in Mind, A Small Family Business, and with Andrew Lloyd Webber, the musical By Jeeves. He has ... written several children’s plays. His work has been presented in the West End, at the National Theatre and the RSC. In 1997, Sir Alan was knighted for his services to the theatre.
