Alan Alda (Real name: Alfonso Joseph D'Abruzzo) (January 28, 1936-) is an American actor. He has appeared in, as well as directed and wrote many films. He is probably most famous for his role as "Hawkeye" Pierce, the central character on the comedy/drama TV series M*A*S*H, as well as writing and directing several episodes of the show, and later becoming one of its producers. Alan ... has been the host of Scientific American Frontiers on PBS since 1993. His father, Robert Alda, was another actor, and his mother, Joan, was once crowned Miss New York. Alan has been married to Arlene Weiss since 1957 and they have three daughters.

Alan Alda was born in New York City. He is the son of well-known actor Robert Alda. Alan was raised with vaudeville and burlesque comedians, and took in as many jokes and routines as he could. He entered into the acting field at the age of sixteen when he made his debut in summer stock in Barnesville, Penn. He attended New York’s Fordham University and studied in Europe. He performed on stage in Rome and on television in Amsterdam with his father in his junior year.
