Aladdin was followed by Disney's first direct-to-video sequel, The Return of Jafar in 1994. The film saw the debut of a new character, Abis Mal, voiced by Jason Alexander, and all of the original cast, except for Robin Williams, replaced by Dan Castellaneta, and Douglas Seale, replaced by Val Bettin. The sequel was followed by the animated television series Aladdin, that ran from 1994 to 1996 and had the same cast of The Return of Jafar, except for Jonathan Freeman. Also in 1996, the Aladdin story was concluded with another direct-to-video film, Aladdin and the King of Thieves, that saw Robin Williams' return as the Genie and had the appearance of Cassim, Aladdin's father (voiced by John Rhys-Davies). John Musker and Ron Clements had no involvement any of them.

Despite his magical aspirations, Jafar is actually incapable of performing any supernatural feats during the majority of Aladdin. He is shown to be scholarly and learned in arcane lore, his secret chamber filled with strange devices and stacks of tomes, and, as such, he operates more on the level of an alchemist throughout the film’s duration than an actual magician. Instead of casting spells, he relies on previously prepared potions capable of producing magical phenomenon, dropping a vial of red liquid on the floor, for example, in order to create a cloud of smoke. He ... relies heavily on certain relics in his possession, such as his snake-headed staff which is capable, through its enchanted ruby eyes, of hypnotizing people. A gigantic hourglass which he keeps in his study also serves as a crystal ball for him, granting him the ability to see the outside world. He is also a master of disguise, assuming the appearance of an old beggar man in order to gain Aladdin’s confidence.

Having returned from a year in Nigeria, Joy came home to Welton and spent a short spell with LRP during 1992 taking the title role in Aladdin. She went on to play a fine Miss Vivie opposite Ruth Andrews in Mrs Warren's Profession. Determined not to do any more theatre, Joy was working in the Co-op toy department while looking for a real job! It was during this time that she was called upon to step into the role of Simms at very short notice. She learnt the part in one afternoon and showed that she had a photographic memory as well as a fine acting talent.

As Aladdin is entering the Cave of Wonders, immediately before he says "Would ya look at that!" on the left side of the screen on the bricks (or are they stones?) forming the doorway is a curlicue design forming a Mickey head and ears.

[I]t must be said that all of the animators did a fantastic job on this film -- Glen Keane's Aladdin himself being the obvious example -- as did the full production team. And Alan Menken and Tim Rice's beautiful, intelligent and catchy musical score ties everything up beautifully, the lyrics advancing the plot in a similar fashion to a stage musical and emphasising the emotion of the piece perfectly.
