Even without Al Jazeera's reputation as a political lightning rod, analysts say it's nearly impossible for any new network not owned by a cable operator to get carriage these days. Cable companies are wary of paying fees for yet another channel when they already offer hundreds of others.
Sunnyvale Ford For 40 million viewers in the Arab world, Al-Jazeera, a Qatar-based satellite television channel, provides a window into the intricate world of American politics. This week, its 16 reporters and staff will air 13 hours of broadcasts from the convention -- more time than the combined coverage of America's major television networks, ABC, CBS and NBC.

Marash said Al Jazeera reaches between 50 percent to 60 percent of the Arab world, while AJE is geared to the world below the equator. "Whereas U.S. networks focus 80 percent on the Western world, AJ focuses on the rest of the world," he said. He said AJE provides a lot of news about America that the other networks miss. He emphasized that its ethics code demands straight news reporting.

At least for now, most Americans will have no chance to see Al-Jazeera to judge for themselves. Al-Jazeera's list of U.S. carriers included none of the major U.S. cable TV providers: Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Charter Communications or Cablevision. Neither of the two major satellite TV providers in the U.S. — Dish Network and DirecTV — are carrying the network.
