Samir Khader has covered and observed the war on terror through his work with the Arab news network, Al-Jazeera, which he joined after working as a journalist for French and Jordanian television. Khader’s insights recently landed him a lead role in Control Room, a new documentary by Jehane Noujaim about the war in Iraq. In These Times spoke with Khader in New York.

August 7, 2004 – The Iraqi interim government shuts down the Baghdad office of Al Jazeera for one month, citing national security concerns. “This decision was taken to protect the people of Iraq and the interests of Iraq,†Prime Minister Iyad Allawi tells a news conference. Although it was only a one-month ban, the shutdown was extended indefinitely in September 2004, and the offices sealed. The bureau is still closed, but Al Jazeera continues to report from Iraq through a network of stringers.

Al-Jazeera's Ballout said the network was not given a reason for the closure. He said the closure inhibits the "right of the Arab people around the world to see a comprehensive picture about what's going on in an important region like Iraq."

Funny how Peter Arnett and NBC can speak out against the US, but you never hear Iraqi's or even Arabs speak out against Hussein, or Bin Laden on Al-Jazeera. Given that, its easy to see how some have concluded that Al-Jazeera has picked sides. To the extent that they persist in being a propaganda tool, they deserve what they get.

An interesting, and sometimes tragic path has led to the success of al-Jazeera since its launch in November 1996. Its difficulties have ... been its success; the ban from reporting in Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and al-geria has done nothing to reduce a fierce loyalty from more than 40 million viewers.
