Al Jazeera: Al Jazeera International

Al Jazeera is like Fox News or American (not International) CNN. Depending on who's watching it, it's biased. But there is a committment to putting on a good program and getting "the story".

"While Al Jazeera International might have politics wrapped around it, they might as well be Al Bruce" in terms of its likelihood of getting distribution, said Bruce Leichtman, president of media analysis firm Leichtman Research Group. "You can take any one of the handful of new channels, and they're all in the same position."

Like many large companies in the Middle East, Al Jazeera International will largely be managed and staffed by foreigners. Al Jazeera's management looks like the alumni club of a British boarding school. Nigel Parsons, formerly with CNN and the BBC, will be the managing director, while Steve Clark, director of news, hails from England's Sky News. David Foster, another Sky alumnus, will serve as the main presenter, or anchor, from Doha.

The new channel, Al Jazeera International, is slated to debut Nov. 15. The station hopes to win over viewers from CNN and the BBC -- but it faces a difficult battle in convincing U.S. cable operators to carry its signal. No deals have yet been announced.

Following the sharp criticism of the Iraqis for breaching international law, al-Jazeera asked one of its advisers to provide additional defense arguments. Former Colonel Osama Damj at first acknowledged that prisoners should not be displayed for public curiosity. But, he added, there is an exception: that is, if the display is in the interest of the prisoners. Damj explained that the Iraqi leadership had two objectives in airing this broadcast. One was to prove they did indeed have U.S. soldiers in their custody. The other was to demonstrate that Baghdad respects human rights and that the prisoners are in good health.

Besides, Oliver contends, initial numbers in the U.S. are not crucial to Al Jazeera International, adding the channel's target is a global English-speaking audience, not just an American one. Oliver figures that the channel will have 40 million households locked up by launch time, thanks to deals with Britain's British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC (BSY ), as well as distributors in India, Australia, France, and Germany. But without the U.S., Al Jazeera may not be pushing all of the frontiers Sir David had in mind.
