Al Jazeera: Al Jazeera English
built 646 days ago
A UPI story began: “Most Americans can’t get Al Jazeera English, the new news network that U.S. cable and satellite TV does not yet offer. But Pentagon employees can.” It was about the channel being on closed circuit Pentagon TV. One can understand this, since the Pentagon needs to monitor the enemy. The key to the story came later,  when Bryan Whitman, deputy assistant secretary of defense for Public Affairs, “said the Pentagon has adopted a ‘wait and see’ attitude before it will schedule appearances by many DOD officials on the new network.”
Al-Jazeera English (AJE), a subsidiary of Qatar’s Al-Jazeera Arabic network, represents a new form of transnational media that has the declared purpose of revolutionizing the global mediasphere. Launched on November 15, 2006, AJE is already accessible in over 100 million households worldwide, and recently has agreed to provide free distribution via multiple video sharing websites, making it accessible to anyone with a connection to the World Wide Web. Hyped as “the voice of the South,” AJE promises to contain the technological capacity and the ideological wherewithal to provide new and productive fora for cross-cultural communications. According to its proponents, AJE presents a tremendous opportunity for a new direction in the discourse of global newsflows. With its avowed promise of giving a “voice to the voiceless,” AJE could represent a new style of media that challenges to existing research regarding transnational media organizations and media and conflict scholarship more broadly.

When executives for broadcaster Al Jazeera first planned a new 24-hour English language channel, the idea was to offer viewers an alternative to CNN (TWX ), the BBC, and other Western news outlets. They hired such heavyweight talent as veteran TV host Sir David Frost to lend cachet. What they didn't prepare for was the cold shoulder they would receive in the U.S.
Al Jazeera logo Al Jazeera English, the new international news channel from the Qatar-based television network, has begun broadcasting from its main studios in Doha. The opening broadcast, which was available in 80 million households around the world, featured a clip introducing the channel. Al Jazeera English is aiming to be the channel of reference for Middle East events.

Look at Al Jazeera English if you may, it gave a powerful voice to an Israeli activist on the night of Eid. It totally was in favor of Israel, Israelis, and Jews and the opinions were met with the utmost respect. You really call that hate, propaganda, etc? It promoted interfaith THROUGHOUT Eid, Christmas, and all the other celebrations. Jews were in the studio, and were portrayed very nicely on the show, as were the Muslims and Christian interfaith activists.
Al Jazeera English would offer a healthy challenge to American television news outlets, pressuring them to invest in their international coverage once again so they can run more world news more consistently. Most foreign news-gathering operations have been shrinking, and news outlets have been closing their overseas bureaus, but Al Jazeera English has set out on the opposite course. It has 20 bureaus worldwide, and the network overall - that is, together with the Arabic channel, which broadcasts entirely different programs - has 60, including 12 in Africa and 10 in the Middle East.
