Al Green was born April 13, 1946, in Forrest City (St. Francis County), Arkansas. St. Francis County, located along the Mississippi Delta, is one of the most economically depress areas in the state, and hence the nation. green was born into a large family. When he was 9, he and his brothers formed a gospel quartet, the Green Brothers, which toured the South. A few years later, the family moved to grand Rapids, Mich., and by age 16, he formed a pop group, Al Green and the Creations, with high school buddies.
Al Green Tickets Al Green was born on April 13, 1946 in Forrest City, Arkansas. He was the son of a sharecropper, and got his start in music at the age of nine when he sang in a local quartet. Green progressed through different bands until he was discovered by a record executive and signed to a contract. His solo start was successful, but tragedy struck early in his career. He turned down a proposal from his fiancee, who in turn committed suicide. Green decided to turn to Christianity, and his work has been more gospel-oriented ever since.

Al Green did very few songs, stopped singing in the middle of them and had his male background singer fill in when he dropped out, if he didn't have audience participation for the sing-a-long, etc. Had full camera on him as he stopped to drink water off to the side of the stage.
After hitting that note, not once, but twice, Green began the conversation with a question. "You holding a tomato sandwich?" Pardon? He asked it again. Informed that, sadly, this was not the case, Green replied, "Go eat you a tomato sandwich. That's love and happiness right there - pure and simple."
