Al Green By the age of nine, Al Green was singing professionally, touring with a group of siblings known as The Greene Brothers. But even at an early age, the battle between the secular and the spiritual was raging within him: Al's father kicked him out of the group after catching him listening to Jackie Wilson. Heavily influenced by Wilson and Sam Cooke, Al followed their lead, forming an R&B group called The Creations (later the Soul Mates) in Grand Rapids, MI, where the family had re-located. The group scored a Top Ten R&B hit with 1967's "Back Up Train," but subsequent efforts failed to match that success.
For 35 years, Al Green has been the authority on love, moving from bedroom to pulpit to a combination of the two. These days, Green, after a period dedicated to gospel music, again performs the secular hits he made with producer Willie Mitchell - "Tired Of Being Alone," "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)," "I'm Still In Love With You," "Take Me To The River," the list goes on and on. He's in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. He has won multiple Grammys. It is generally agreed that there is no finer soul singer alive than Green, with the exception of Aretha Franklin.

Al Green album: "The Essential" While continuing with his ministry in Memphis, Al Green has taken time to tour worldwide over the past few years. Performing a mixture of gospel and R&B favorites, his global audience has continued to expand and in 1993, he began recording for BMG International. That year, his first album for the company "Don't Look Back" was released in different territories outside of the U.S. and eight of the tracks form the basis for "Your Heart's In Good Hands."

One night after a concert at Disneyland, the soul singer Al Green had a conversion experience. He woke up in his hotel room, feeling as he never had before or since, shouting ''Hallelujah!'' Over the next two years, he vacillated between what he calls ''a million-dollar career'' and his calling to sing gospel music.
Considered by music writers as the last true successor of Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, Al Green has enjoyed a long and rewarding career as a pop and gospel singer. His pop and religious works have earned consistent praise from musicians and critics alike. Unlike the great R&B shouters and early soul singers, Green has a voice that, although capable of rich blues-drenched tone and soaring falsetto cries, delivers plaintive emotion without harsh delivery or guttural technique. His sexy, silken voice landed him a string of million-selling hits in the 1970s. Following his departure from popular music in 1980, he became a member of the ministry and a singer of gospel music. His recent return to pop music, and the appearance of his music in documentaries and film soundtracks, has once again brought him widespread notice.
