Al Green in concert at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California on July 27, 2006. On October 18, 1974, Mary Woodson, a longtime friend of Al Green, assaulted him, then killed herself. It is believed that she ardently wished to be more than just a friend to Al Green. One night, she left the guest quarters, then entered the main section of the house without permission. She sneaked into his bathroom to make a surprise attack. With no warning whatsoever, she threw a large pot of sticky boiling grits over him as he was undressed and preparing to shower. As Al Green writhed in pain, she ran into another part of the house and committed suicide by shooting herself.
In October 1974 Green was hospitalized with second-degree burns on his back, arm, and stomach. A former girlfriend, Mrs. Mary Woodson of New Jersey, had poured boiling grits on him while he was bathing in his Memphis home and then killed herself with his gun. The incident apparently triggered a spiritual crisis in Green, and he announced his intention to go into the ministry. In 1976 he purchased a church building in Memphis and was ordained pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle.
In October 1974, Green's ex-girlfriend Mary Woodson poured boiling grits on him while he was in the bath, then killed herself with his gun. He was hospitalized for second degree burns. Green interpreted this as a sign from God to join the ministry.
