Al Gore: Issues
built 199 days ago
Al Gore is an entertainer in show business: he's interested in scoring oscars and making money in the media industry. He's never shown an interest in science, and at least since leaving office hasn't addressed any issue of public policy outside a film or fictional art context.
Al Gore introduces a comprehensive arms control proposal in Congress. His proposal serves as an example of Gore's tendency to master the details of complicated issues, including arms control, technology, and the environment.

Al Gore refused. ALgore has no intention of publically debating the GW issue with anuone in any format, least he be made to look like a fool, and like SC_Con said, that would hurt his pocketbook.
In 1976 Gore decided to run for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Having a famous name, running in the district that sent his father to the Congress for many terms, he won the primary election against eight other candidates and went on to win in the general election. He ran successfully in the three following elections. Gore claimed some early attention in 1980 when he was assigned to the House Intelligence Committee studying nuclear arms. Gore researched and eventually published a comprehensive manifesto on arms restructuring for future security, which was published in the February 1982 issue of Congressional Quarterly. In 1984 Gore campaigned for a seat in the U.S. Senate that had just become vacant.

The president has often looked to Gore for advice on foreign-policy issues. In fact, Gore favored action against Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic long before the first shot was fired. His call for military intervention somewhat contradicts his humanitarian nature. When democracy or human rights are at stake, Gore has historically endorsed military intervention rather than diplomacy, as he did in Haiti.

The problem is that Al Gore did not articulate this position very well, and got hammered for it. Even his actual quote leaves room for interpretation. You can complain about the media distorting him, but that’s what the media does and its never going to change. Gore (and politicians in general) have to be very careful about what they say. And if they aren’t, they are going to lose elections, even when they should win on issues and qualifications.
