Al Christie begann 1909 für die Filmproduktionsgesellschaft "Nestor Motion Picture Company" zu arbeiten und drehte zahlreiche Kurzfilme fürs Kino. 1916 gründete er mit seinem Bruder Charles Christie eine eigene Filmproduktionsgesellschaft namens "Christie Film Company" und eröffnete das erste Luxushotel in Hollywood. Die Weltwirtschaftskrise führte jedoch zur Schließung der "Christie Film Company" und Al Christie musste seinen gesamten Besitz verkaufen, um über die Runden zu kommen.

Gangly American comic Billy Dooley was discovered on the vaudeville circuit by producer Al Christie, who brought Dooley and his stage partner Frances Lee) to Hollywood in 1925. Somewhat reminiscent of whiteface comic Larry Semon, Dooley played dumb sailors and other service men in a series of two-reel comedies with explanatory titles such as A Goofy Gob (1925), A Briny Boob (1926), the inevitable Sailor Beware (1927), and A Dizzy Diver (1928).

By 1922, the brothers were so successful that they set up Christie Realty Corporation with $1 million in capital stock and at 6724 Hollywood Blvd., built the Christie Hotel. Hollywood's first luxury hotel, it was designed to meet the needs of the many executives and stars of the burgeoning film industry.
