Alphonse "Al" Capone was probably one of the most famous of the criminals of the Great Depression. Born in Brooklyn on January 17, 1899, he was a friend of people such as Pretty Boy Floyd, Bugsy Siegel, Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, and others. At a young age, Capone became involved in minor offenses in the street world and with small time criminals working in his neighborhood. Al was a friend of people like Pretty Boy Floyd and Bugsy Siegel. Al became a member of the James Street Gang and became a lifelong friend of the leader Johnny Torrio as well as Lucky Lucianno. These men became three of the most famous criminals in the country and of the Great Depression.

Al Capone became head of the Chicago mafia after Torrio was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt and stepped down from the head spot in 1925. Throughout his reign he ran the streets of Chicago with his mob. When his mob with at its prime, Capone had city aldermen, mayors, legislators, governors, congressmen, and over half the Chicago police force on his payroll.

Wanting a respectable life for Mae and Sonny, Al Capone moved to Baltimore where he acquired a job as the bookkeeper of a construction firm. The aura of respectability lost its charm when Johnny Torrio contacted Capone in 1921 and offered him a job. At twenty-two, Al Capone became Torrio’s main man for managing the many brothels and eventually became his partner.

Initially, Capone took up grunt work with Johnny Torrio's outfit, but the elder Torrio immediately recognized Capone's talents and by 1922 Capone was Torrio's second in command, responsible for much of the gambling, alcohol, and prostitution rackets in the city of Chicago. One of his greatest triumphs was the seizure of the region of Cicero in 1924. It became known as one of the most crooked elections in Chicago's long history with voters threatened at the polling station by thugs. His mayoral candidate won by a huge majority but it was only weeks later he claimed he would run Capone out of town.
