Al-Aqsa Intifada: Palestinian Arabs
built 230 days ago
JAFFA — The al-Aqsa intifada has succeeded in altering agendas both in Israel and the region. In Israel, it has drawn Arab citizens into the struggle for the first time, while pushing the Labour Party rightward. In the wider Arab world, it directly threatens the existing regimes, which have no choice but to hear its demands. In these respects, this second intifada differs from the original of 1987-1990.
Negotiations at Sharm-el-Sheikh in October to end the violence produced the Mitchell Report, considered an authoritative report on Al-Aqsa Intifada. The report blamed both the Israelis and the Palestinians for the violence. At the negotiations, both sides vowed to put an end to the violence. At an Arab League summit in Cairo... Arafat and other Arab leaders praised the Intifada and rejected the Mitchell Report. Soon thereafter, a suicide bombing in Jerusalem increased tensions and diminished hopes of ending the violence.
As of now, the international law challenge has two dimensions, both of which are urgent, and need to be taken into account in comprehending the al-Aqsa intifada. First, Israel has failed to rectify the underlying violation of Palestinian legal rights. The "peace process" has not been a good faith effort to achieve such results, including the long-deferred realization of a Palestinian right of self-determination. Second, Israel has refused to discharge its role as occupying power in compliance with the basic provisions of Geneva IV, and the UN and the international community generally have failed to take the appropriate steps in light of this noncompliance. With Palestinian civilians dying daily, the importance of upholding this legal responsibility is self-evident.

Al Aqsa Intifada is the third Muslimgauze collaboration with reggae alchemist the Rootsman. Inspired by the Palestinian uprising against Israeli violence, the title speaks for itself. The album is broken down into thirds – the first segment consists of the original Muslimgauze/Rootsman collaboration, while the second and third are individual versions by each artist.
Neither Barak nor Arafat can be considered to be in a better position now than they were before the Al-Aqsa Intifada. The situation has spiraled out of control as a result of Ariel Sharon's endeavors to impose certain conditions on Israeli society. While four years ago, the radical Palestinian opposition managed to hamper the peace process, now it is the turn of the Israeli right... leaving the chances of settlement harder than ever.

As far as the Palestinian Authority is concerned, five years after the beginning of the second Intifada Al-Aqsa, it still gives the perceptible impression to be broken, politically fractured, riddled with corruption, unable to provide security for its own people. Kidnappings, violent occupations of public buildings, internal fractures do not represent anything but the extreme need of a comprehensive reform within the PA apparatuses.
