Akrotiri and Dhekelia cover 3% of the land area of Cyprus, a total of 98 square miles (47.5 at Akrotiri and 50.5 at Dhekelia). 60% of the land is privately owned, either by British or Cypriot citizens. The other 40% is owned by the Ministry of Defence, or is classed as Crown land. In addition to Akrotiri and Dhekelia themselves, the Treaty of Establishment ... provides for the continued use by the British Government of certain facilities within Cyprus, known as Retained Sites.

The excavation at Akrotiri were very fruitful. What was discovered was a Minoan Pompey; the only well preserved settlement of the Bronze Age of about 1500bc. The pottery found in the town is almost contemporary with that of Crete. So for many people the theory is vindicated, although not all are convinced. But the importance of the site is far greater than was expected even by the excavator.

The extraction record of the Akrotiri aquifer after the construction of the Kouris dam in 1987 shows that until 1990 large quantities (up to 18 mio. m3/year) were still extracted, causing rapid propagation of the seawater front into the aquifer. For the past ten years the extraction volumes have been reduced successively from 18 mio. m3/year in 1990 to about 7 mio. m3/year in the period 1997-1999. Recently, the Akrotiri aquifer was declared a conservation area, and now only limited extraction is permitted and water meters are installed in all wells.

The excavations at Akrotiri began in 1967 by Pro Spyros Marinatos. He chose to excavate there in the hope of verifying a theory which he had formulated some thirty years ago when he was still a young man at the beginning if his career.
