Akrotiri is one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. Evidence of habitation at Akrotiri first came to light in the second half of the 19th century. However, systematic excavations were begun much later, in 1967, by Professor Spyridon Marinatos under the auspices of the Archaeological Society at Athens.

One and a half kilometer below Akrotiri village, is the archaeological site of Akrotiri which was destroyed by the Volcano erruption in 1500BC. Akrotiri was buried by volcanic ash and was discovered after excavations began by Professor Marinatos in 1967. No human skeletons or valuable belongings were found, so it is an evidence that residents had the warning of the eruption and they evacuated the place in time. Akrotiri had cultural links with Crete and trading activities with Egypt. You will walk through the streets, between two and three storeyed houses with squares, workshops and shops. Finds included vases, cooking pots and marvellous frescoes which are in exhibition in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

The Akrotiri aquifer has been suffering the consequences of seawater intrusion and salinisation for the past two decades. Many wells have been abandoned and a very costly irrigation system, conveying water from the Kouris dam to the agricultural areas have been implemented. The problem of the irrigation system is, that in times of water shortage (during the summer months), freshwater from the dams is provided in a very limited amount. For the past ten years, the aquifer has been declared a conservation area, where groundwater exploitation takes place mainly to compensate the water shortage during summer. Even though the area has been declared a conservation area (no more new well permits and water meter installation in wells), the authorities do not have a decision making tool to allow them to evaluate, where and which quantities can be extracted to preserve or even ameliorate the overall groundwater quality. For the moment decision of extraction quantities are therefore made according to plot-sizes or seamingly randomly.

Akrotiri was first constructed in the mid-1950s to relieve pressure on the main RAF base on the island, RAF Nicosia. In the aftermath of the Egyptian repudiation of the Anglo-Egyptian treaty, British forces had to be withdrawn from the Canal Zone in Egypt. After the ending of the League of Nations mandate over Palestine in 1948, the only other British territory in the eastern Mediterranean was Cyprus. Consequently, the withdrawal from Egypt caused an enormous build-up of forces in Cyprus. This period ... coincided with the outbreak of the internal security problems of EOKA in Cyprus, further increasing pressure on the RAF airfields on the island.
