Akron: Schools

The University of Akron is home to over 23,000 students, making it the fourth largest public university in the state, and is a world leader in polymer research. While Akron continues to predominantly serve commuter students, the university has worked hard to shake off its image as a “commuter school." A $300 million dollar construction project saw the completion of nine new buildings, fourteen renovated facilities, and a freshly landscaped campus. The University ... offers a combined B.S./M.D. program with the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. A new on-campus football stadium, built to replace the aging "Rubber Bowl" is slated to begin construction in the Spring of 2008.

The US Department of Agriculture and the Ohio Department of Education announced a recall on meat sent to many local school districts including Akron. Child Nutrition Services reports that only beef taco meat has been recalled, and that meat has been identified and isolated. USDA officials said there is little health risk from the meat, but it has been recalled because the processor violated department rules. Please note that no other beef products that Akron uses, including hamburger, meat loaf, chili, etc., were involved in the recall.
