In the fifties and sixties Akron saw a surge in industry as use of the automobile took off. But while America was still using bias-ply tires, Europe had already seen the wave of the future in radial tires. The radials had almost three times the tread life of bias-ply, and Akron’s rubber mills were not equipped to handle the manufacturing requirements. As a result many companies tried to produce ‘hybrid’ tires, which were troublesome at best. Firestone manufactured the ill-fated 500 series, which was recalled in the millions. B.F.

The tentative agreement between Goodyear and IRG calls for Goodyear to sell most of its Akron area property and facilities to IRG. And, IRG will construct a new world headquarters building, a new headquarters for the company's North American Tire business, and make improvements to the company's technical center and research facilities. Goodyear will lease the new buildings and the existing technical center from IRG.

Menches Brothers Restaurant is known for two of America's favorite foods that were invented by the Menches Brothers of Akron. In 1885 at the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, NY, concessionaires Frank and Charles Menches ran out of pork for their famous sausage sandwiches. They switched to chopped beef and spiced it with brown sugar, coffee, and a few other still-secret ingredients, creating the beloved hamburger.

Under terms of the contract, ACS, a premier provider of business process and information technology solutions, will provide a wide range of HR business process services for Goodyear's Akron-based North American operations. Approximately 100 HR positions in Akron have transferred to ACS as part of the agreement.
