Akon: Trouble
built 634 days ago
Akon was off to a great start after the singles “Locked up,” “Lonely,” and “Ghetto” became huge hits in the U.S., UK, Australia, and Germany. Although Trouble was a popular album, it was Akon's collaboration with other artists that really brought him into the limelight. In 2005 Akon was featured in Young Jeezy's song, “Soul Survivor” which appeared on the top five list of the Billboard Hot 100.

Following up on success from Trouble, his debut album, Akon switches things up and takes it to the clubs this time around. After pumping out street-themed "hood classics" such as "Ghetto," "Locked Up" (featuring Styles P), and "Soul Survivor" alongside Young Jeezy, Akon now assumes the role of party-going player; this is not the rugged and gritty Akon weve grown accustomed to. Not even a decent Eminem verse could save this track, which relies on a bland chorus that rhymes "shadow" with "Gallardo" and "Tae Bo." "Smack That" holds no weight in comparison to current club tracks such as "Money Maker," the bouncy collaboration between Ludacris and Pharrell, among others. Expect "Smack That" to drop off the charts as fast as it popped up.

Until early 2005, Akon had not broken into the pop mainstream. Lonely was released as the third single from Trouble. The song became an overnight smash, landing in the top 5 of the pop singles chart and giving Akons debut album a large and much needed sales boost. The song sampled Bobby Vintons 1964 #1 hit Mr. Lonely, and made Akon one of the breakout artists of 2005. Lonely ... topped the UK and Australian pop charts.

The Fishkill incident wasn't the first concert trouble Akon got into this year. In April, Akon drew widespread criticism for performing on-stage simulated sex with a 14-year-old girl at a concert in Trinidad.

On August 2, 2007, Akon was scheduled to perform at the Rock tha Block Tour in Australia but had trouble obtaining a visa due to his criminal past. The tour was postponed until late August and his visa was eventually processed but Akon was quoted as saying "Australia is the home of the convicts so it's the last place I would have ever thought it would be a problem".[13]

When Universal signed Akon, they immediately let him lyrically embrace the rough background of his teenage years. Using this knowledge, Akon put together an album full of edgy songs about life in the hood, prison, and drug running. This LP, titled Trouble, was released in June 2004. The album gained immediate popularity with its preceding single, Locked Up, a top 10 R&B hit. The second single, Ghetto, became another urban radio staple.
