She then appeared in popular Bollywood films Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Mohabbatein (2000). In 2002, Rai appeared with Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in the lavishly produced Devdas, which was a major box-office success.

Rai debuted in Tamil language film, Iruvar (1997) with Mohanlal.[1] She was introduced to Bollywood in the film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya with Bobby Deol as her co-star; the film was not a big hit on box office. However, her third project, a Tamil-language film, Jeans (1998) by S. Shankar was a critical and commercial success for which she was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award South. Aishwarya then appeared in many Bollywood films; a few successful films of her career include Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Taal (1999) for which her performance was lauded.[2] She was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role in the former. In 2000 she had a supporting role in the hit film Mohabbatein and ... in another hit film Josh. Her third film in Tamil language project to date is, Kandukondain Kandukondain won her positive reviews for her serious portrayal of her character, Meenakshi.

Over the week, instead of celebrating the release of yet another film featuring them together, Aishwarya and Abhishek have been confronting uncomfortable questions that the kiss has thrown up in their relationship. Sources said her skimpy costumes too have not gone down well with the first family of Bollywood. "They are wondering where was the need for Aishwarya to change her demure image at this stage and agree to a full-blown kiss on film," said the friend.

Lukewarm reviews aside, Rai appears to be successfully balancing her commitments in both Hollywood and Bollywood this year. She's wrapped "Singularity," co-starring Brendan Fraser, for director Roland Joffe. She's filmed "Chaos," an English-language remake of a French film by director Coline Serreau. (Serreau is directing the Hollywood version, which will star Rai as a woman randomly attacked and beaten on an urban street, and her co-star is no less than Meryl Streep.) Rai seems to be on a career path parallel to that of Chinese actor Jet Li, who acts not only in glitzy, English-language Hollywood movies such as "Lethal Weapon 4" or "Cradle 2 Grave" but ... in martial arts films shot by Chinese directors, such as Zhang Yimou's "Hero" -- which became a crossover hit and won an Oscar for best foreign film.
