In the US, all of the airports are operated directly by government entities or government-created airport authorities (... known as port authorities). Only Indianapolis International Airport, which is owned by the City of Indianapolis and leased to BAA Indianapolis, Inc., a subsidiary of BAA, and Stewart International Airport in New York's Hudson Valley, are entirely operated by a private entity. Stewart International Airport was the nation's first privatized commercial airport and operates under a 99-year lease agreement with the New York State Department of Transportation. National Express Group, Inc., operates Stewart International Airport and is the US subsidiary of the National Express Group, plc, in the UK.

Flight Snapshot is a service that enables airports to provide a real-time graphical view of their airspace for public view on their web site. Flight Explorer provides the airport with a static image file, updated every five minutes that can be customized and delivered directly to your web server or location of your choice. The Flight Snapshot image can be customized to show various combinations of overlays including weather, aircraft tags, airports, origins, destinations, ETA's and much more. There are a number of configurations available including a rotating snapshot of multiple airports and a more common refreshing snapshot of a single airport.

Products placed on the QPL can be used by airports to authenticate employees for applications such as securing access to restricted areas. The TSA conducted pre-qualification tests on a number of products, several of which then were operationally tested with the help of the International Biometric Group (IBG). IBG did a number of performance tests, including checking for speed, accuracy and the false accept and reject rates. Two hundred users were enrolled on the V-Station MIFARE and were asked to verify themselves on the fingerprint reader three or four times a day. Of the seven products that were operationally tested, the V-Station MIFARE was one of only two products for Physical Access Control that received approval. Two other sensor level components were approved.

The vast majority of the world's airports are non-towered, with no air traffic control presence at all. However, at particularly busy airports, or airports with other special requirements, there is an air traffic control (ATC) system whereby controllers (usually ground-based) direct aircraft movements via radio or other communications links. This coordinated oversight facilitates safety and speed in complex operations where traffic moves in all three dimensions. Air traffic control responsibilities at airports are usually divided into at least two main areas: ground and tower, though a single controller may work both stations. The busiest airports ... have clearance delivery, apron control, and other specialized ATC stations.
