Post-war airline route structure.[citation needed] Airline financing is quite complex, since airlines are highly leveraged operations. Not only must they purchase (or lease) new airliner bodies and engines regularly, they must make major long-term fleet decisions with the goal of meeting the demands of their markets while producing a fleet that is relatively economical to operate and maintain. Compare Southwest Airlines and their reliance on a single airplane type (the Boeing 737 and derivatives), with the now defunct Eastern Air Lines which operated 17 different aircraft types, each with varying pilot, engine, maintenance, and support needs.
Horizon Air [H]as simplified its entire fare structure and eliminated the weekend-stay rule, on all fares to all cities the airline serves. Now all of Horizon's fares, including its lowest regular prices, sale fares and Web-only specials, have only a one-night minimum stay or none at all. Gone, too, are maximum-stay restrictions and fuel surcharges. Horizon's latest and final wave of fare simplification has ... resulted in many new, lower fares between cities Horizon serves in the Northwest. The simplified fare structure also applies to cities Horizon serves in partnership with Alaska Airlines. While everyone can benefit from the simplified fare structure, banishment of the weekend-stay rule will be especially appealing to business travelers.
When railroads were built, if the topography did not intervene, developers aimed to follow the direct airline between two points. This was possible across the great plains of the West. But even when there was landscape to reckon with, airline was used to mean "the shortest way possible." In 1863, for example, the Congressional Globe reported "a proposition to construct an air-line railroad between Washington and New York." And air-line became an attractive name for a railroad, just as instant did for foods in the next century. There was the Raleigh and Augusta Air-Line Railroad, the Selma & Peatville Air-line Railway, and the Muscogee Air Line, among many others.

Continental this year expects to take delivery of an average of two-to-three new Next-Generation 737s per month, which includes a mix of 737-900ERs and 737-800s. The airplanes are part of Continental's comprehensive fleet strategy, which focuses on improving operational efficiency and customer comfort.
