Airdrie: Brechin City
built 638 days ago
Airdrie United got off to a promising start, cruising past Brechin City in the semi-final by an aggregate score of 6-1. This meant they only had to overcome Stirling Albion in a two-legged decider to ensure survival. Unfortunately the team drew the away leg of the tie 2-2 (having led 2-0 until the final five minutes) and lost the home game 3-2. Thus confirming the newly formed Airdrie's first relegation in their short history.
The results are in for 2005 and Airdrie residents love their city. The survey shows that 93 per cent of residents surveyed, rate the quality of life as good or very good. Even better news if you have children and are thinking about moving here, 97 percent of respondents with children have Airdrie a big thumbs up!
[Airdrie] Airdrie was named after a village southeast of Glasgow Scotland. William McKenzie, a contracting engineer for Calgary and Edmonton Railway, named the village in 1889. The name "Airdrie" means "The King's Height". A unique feature of Airdrie is that its elevation makes it the highest city in Canada.

The city of Airdrie is positioned along the province of Alberta's key economic corridor. Located on the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor (Queen Elizabeth II Highway - Provincial Highway #2), 6 kilometres from Calgary (32 kilometres from downtown) and 280 kilometres south of Edmonton, the city attracts development by providing access to regional, national and international markets. The growth of this bustling community of 31,500 can be attributed to its strategic location in the Calgary region.
More and more business owners are choosing to set up shop in Airdrie. With no business tax assessed and the City administration doing its best to take care of business by providing a pro-business environment in the City, it's no surprise. Currently, over 900 businesses provide goods and services to Airdrie and Calgary residents. A healthy industrial economic base is provided with a variety of manufacturing, food processing, waste management, truck transportation, warehousing, oil and gas and agricultural businesses represented. Access to national and international markets is provided by Airdrie's location on the major north-south highway in Alberta and its proximity to the Calgary International Airport and the Trans Canada Highway. From a consumer perspective, Airdrie offers residents a choice of several malls providing retail outlets as well as professional, dental and medical services.
With continued hot weather and little moisture, Airdrie residents are using more water for watering their lawns, gardens and flower beds. This increase in demand is normal, but the City would like to remind residents to use outside water carefully.
