Aircraft Hijacking: Hijackers
built 207 days ago
The only aircraft hijacking during 1997 occurred on a flight that had originated in the Central African Republic. In July a lone Lebanse Shia hijacker, who demanded freedom for a number of imprisoned Hizbailan members and who may himself have belonged to the Hizballah, boarded an Air Afrique flight in Bangdi arined with a pistol. After takeoff from Rome, the hijacker diverted the plane to Geneva and demanded that it be refueled and flown to Beirut. While the aircraft was grounded in Geneva, the hijacker shot and killed a French passenger before being overpowered. The hijacker may haw received some support from Lebanese Shia living in the Central African Republic before he boarded the plane. The incident demonsirales that countries in western aand central Africa, with their substantial Lebanese populations, lax security precautions, and an abundance of Western targets, may represent an attractive environment for terrorist qroups- such as Hizbaballah - in search of new locales in which to carry oui attacks against the West.

At the beginning of the 21st century, at a time when a terrorist hijacking of passenger aircraft perhaps was regarded as having become less of a threat, the most spectacular and lethal terrorist incident in history occurred. On September 11, 2001, 19 hijackers belonging to the radical Islamic group al-Qaeda seized four commercial passenger jets to carry out a devastating terrorist attack on the United States. The jets were deliberately crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and into the Pentagon, in Arlington, Virginia, killing approximately 3,000 people. Evidence indicated that the hijackers had wielded knives and box-cutters to hold the crew and passengers at bay while others who had basic pilot training flew the planes into their targets. Hijacking refers to the illegal seizure of an aircraft, ship or vehicle in transit in order to send it to another destination, frequently with the intention of taking passengers hostage. The tactic is effective in the sense that it draws widespread attention and, through hostage taking, establishes a bargaining chip for hijackers seeking to fulfill specific demands.

AIRCRAFT hijacking is the take-over of an aircraft, by a person or group, usually armed. In most cases the pilot is forced to fly according to the order of the hijacker. Aircraft hijacking is extremely rare, but does happen. It is well to consider how you should react if you end up in a hostage situation. Any traveler could become a hostage, whether he or she is traveling within his or her own country or anywhere in the world by any airline.
