HEPA air filters do not function as a sieve, a common misunderstanding. The HEPA filter features a mat of arbitrarily arranged fibers that trap particles and pollutants. The HEPA air filter is highly effective, and here is why; First and foremost is the filter's interception of particles. When these aforementioned particles follow the straight trajectory of an airstream, they are intercepted by the fiber and forced to adhere to it. Secondly there is impaction, whereby the fibers impede the flow of larger particles and pollutants trying to follow the natural curve of an airstream. Rather than rounding those curves, the particles are instead forced directly into the fibers. Lastly, there is diffusion, caused by a collision between gas molecules and the very smallest particles, again impeding their flow through the HEPA filter.

King County's Equipment Shop initiated a new program to save money spent on heavy equipment air filters and substantially reduce the number of used air filters landfilled. The filters are dry cleaned using a "sonic" process. King County expects to save $7000 in 2002 and avoid landfilling of 200 filters.
