Miyazato, the youngest Japanese golfer to win $1 million in a year, gained more TV viewers in Japan than Tiger Woods when both won separate tournaments there on Nov. 21. Playing in her second season, Miyazato is set to make her U.S. debut Thursday at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

In winning the Japan Open Championship at age twenty in 2005, Miyazato became the youngest player on the JLPGA Tour to win a major. Furthering the notion that Miyazato has revived the JLPGA Tour after the retirement of Ayako Okamoto, over 32,000 people (the largest gallery ever to attend a JLPGA event) witnessed the final day of that tournament.

The competition was a great success for Miyazato, who is regarded as a superstar in Japan, where she is viewed in a similar light to the young American Michelle Wie. There is one difference, though. Wie remains an amateur, while Miyazato won five tournaments on Japan's LPGA as a rookie, becoming the first Japanese teenager to earn over US$1-million in a year.

Miyazato's résumé includes one men's tournament, the Okinawa Open — she grew up in the village of Higashi on the northern end of the island. She shot 80-78 and missed the cut last December.

"I was able to win in my first tournament after coming back from America," said Miyazato. "It was tough to create birdie chances on the first three holes because I couldn't control my shots."
