In later exchanges with CIA officers, Massoud defended himself, saying his subcommanders had initiated the planned attacks as agreed that winter, but they had been stalled by weather and other problems. The CIA could find no evidence to support Massoud's account. As far as they could tell, Massoud's commanders had simply not participated in the battles along the Salang.

A court in Paris has found four men guilty of offering logistical support to the killers of Afghan resistance leader Ahmed Shah Masood. The four Islamic militants, who faced up to 10 years in jail, were sentenced to between two and seven years.

India had reportedly provided tacit support to Massoud during the Taliban regime with largely non-military aid. And on the day of the assassination, after one of the terrorists triggered an explosive-packed camera on Massoud's face, it was reportedly to an Indian military hospital near the Afghanistan's northern border that he was taken.

The three other men on trial are accused of providing logistical support, such as false passports and other documents, to the two Tunisians who allegedly assassinated Mr. Massoud. To get close to the Afghan leader, the Tunisians falsely identified themselves as journalists and requested an interview with him.
