Ahmed Shah Massoud: Soviet Union
built 615 days ago
Despite the fact that the Soviet attacks on Panjsher had resumed Massoud was convinced that Panjsher could offer resistance under the leadership of other commanders without his presence. He left the command of Panjsher to the former district attorney Abdul-Mahmood Daqiq. Furthermore, the regions Andaraab, Khost-e Fereng, Eshkamesh, Nahrin, and Keshm had been turned into strongholds by Massoud. They were now known as Panj Sher (Five Lions).

Significantly, Mr. Massoud was widely believed to have started working with the CIA last year. During the 1990s, after the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan, the U.S. intelligence community appeared reluctant to help a foe of the Taleban, which had been instrumental — along with Mr. Massoud — in defeating Soviet forces in Afghanistan.

In 2001, the Afghan Interim Government under president Hamid Karzai awarded him the title of "Hero of the Afghan Nation". Massoud is the subject of Ken Follett's Lie Down With Lions, a novel about the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Many documentaries, books and movies have been made about Ahmad Shah Massoud.
