Ahmed Shah Massoud: Panjshir Valley
built 641 days ago
Promising to cleanse the nation of its warlords, including Massoud, a new militia movement swept from Afghanistan's south beginning in 1994. Its turbaned, eye-shadowed leaders declared that the Koran would slay the Lion of Panjshir, as Massoud was known, where other means had failed.

Massoud turned his birthplace, the Panjshir Valley, 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of Kabul, into a robust fortress. The Soviet military made several massive attempts to eliminate or capture him, but he survived and went on to grow in stature and influence, becoming known as the Lion of the Panjshir.

''Massoud the Afghan'' is mostly devoted to a visit to the Panjshir valley in the summer of 1997, as Massoud prepared for an assault on the Taliban front line. The filmmaker, whose narration is read in English translation by Nicholas Storey, intersperses material from his earlier trips (and the films that resulted from them) to construct a work that is part scrapbook, part history lesson and part diary.
