The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) is a British period instrument orchestra. Formed in 1986 by a group of players, it does not have a principal conductor, but rather is led artistically by a board of musicians elected by the musicians themselves. The current Principal Artists are Sir Simon Rattle CBE, Vladimir Jurowski and Ivan Fischer. In 1986 a group of some of the finest exponents of period instruments in the UK pooled their talents and expertise to found the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE).  In 1992, the OAE scored a major coup when it persuaded Frans Brüggen and Sir Simon Rattle CBE to put their names to the Orchestra as Principal Guest Conductors. It is in its twelfth season as Associate of the Royal Festival Hall, and is ... Associate Orchestra at Glyndebourne. It has toured many countries, including South America and the US in 2002, and South East Asia in autumn 2003. It is the only period instrument orchestra to offer an apprenticeship scheme - the Jerwood/OAE Experience for Young Players.

A group of period instrument players, emulating the self-governing London Symphony Orchestra, formed the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, soon to be commonly abbreviated to OAE. It is named after the era in European history known as the Enlightenment, spanning the late 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. This was a time of great experimentation and innovation, during which instruments, techniques, and ... the form of musical performance developed greatly. Thus the name has a double resonance for the group: it performs music mainly of that time frame, not only using as a starting point knowledge of the instruments, styles and techniques of the day, but also aiming to capture the spirit of innovation and discovery characteristic of the era.

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment is recognised as one of the world's foremost period instrument ensembles. Formed in 1986 as a self-governing orchestra, the OAE has always maintained a player-led approach to artistic planning and programming, working with a range of distinguished guest conductors and in 1992, Sir Simon Rattle and Frans Brüggen were appointed Principal Guest Conductors. In 1997 the work of the London Classical Players was absorbed by the OAE, and Sir Roger Norrington joined the roster of conductors. The Orchestra, as an Associate of London's Royal Festival Hall, gratefully acknowledges the financial support that SBC gives the Orchestra through its association with the Hall.

Since its highly acclaimed debut in 1986, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment has performed works by composers as wide ranging as Purcell and JS Bach, Haydn and Mozart, Brahms and Wagner. Conductors have included both period instrument specialists - Frans Brüggen, Ton Koopman and Gustav Leonhardt - as well as major personalities from the modern orchestral world including Mark Elder, Andrew Davis, Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Simon Rattle, Ivan Fischer, Heinrich Schiff and Paavo Järvi.
