Nigerian schoolchildren who received laptops from a U.S. aid organization have used them to explore pornographic sites on the Internet, the official News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported Thursday. NAN said its reporter had seen pornographic images stored on several of the children's laptops. ''Efforts to promote learning with laptops in a primary school in Abuja have gone awry as the pupils freely browse adult sites with explicit sexual materials,'' NAN said. A representative of the One Laptop Per Child aid group was quoted as saying that the computers, part of a pilot scheme, would now be fitted with filters.

The committee was set up to review criminal law relating to sexual offences against children, and the age of consent, in the wake of the debacle last summer, when the Supreme Court struck down the law on statutory rape. A convicted statutory rapist had appealed successfully on the grounds that he had not been afforded the defence of mistake of age.

Regardless of how one might feel about gay marriage in a religious sense, that shouldn't deny them the opportunities to create a stable living environment for themselves and their children. Marriage is still going to be around well into the future, but it will continue to change with the times. As an institution, it will always hold a significant place in society. People just have to respect the fact that some get married for different reasons. It's possible to love someone without marrying them, and it's just as possible to marry someone without loving them. That doesn't make it any less important in modern society.

Douglas Sovereign Smith Jr., 61, was accused of receiving images over the Internet in February of children engaging in oral sex, intercourse and other sexually explicit conduct. The charges were filed by federal prosecutors March 21.
